Had I but one

Had I but one mission,
I must have failed it;
Had I but one love,
I must have lost it;
But now?
Have I but one heart?
Then why,
Oh, why can’t I break with the past
and embrace some new future?
Have I but one mind?
Then why,
why can’t I reconcile with the past
and tolerate the known future?
Have I but one body?
Truly so,
since I am here, and You,
You are there,
and I – I cannot be at your side
– but I yearn,
to that I swear!
